Micro air vehicles (MAVs) are intended for future intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance use. To adequately fulfill a clandestine capacity, MAVs must operate in close proximity to their intended target without eliciting counter-observation. This objective, along with DARPA's constraint of a sub-15 centimeter span, requires future MAVs to mimic insect appearance and flight characteristics. This thesis describes an experimental method for conducting a structural analysis of a Manduca Sexta (hawkmoth) forewing. Geometry is captured via computed tomography (CT), and frequency data is collected using laser vibrometry in air and vacuum. A finite element (FE) model is constructed using quadratic beams and general-purpose shell elements, and a linear dynamic analysis is conducted. A preliminary verification of the FE model is carried out to ensure the Manduca Sexta forewing is adequately characterized, providing a basis for future fluid-structural interaction computations. Included is a study regarding the aeroelastic effects on flapping-wing insect flight, and an analysis of the structural dynamic anomalies of conventional, flat, semi-rigid flapping wings.

This book by the American, Admiral Sims will be a revelation to many. The British public had no idea that by the time America entered the First World War on 6th April, 1917 the Allied cause was on the brink of falling to the might of Imperial Germany. No plan had been conceived to ensure that vital materials would reach Britain by sea without them falling prey to the omnipresent U-Boat menace. Thousands of tons of essential war supplies were going to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean each week and serious Allied analysts believed that Britain would last less than four months before surrender was inevitable. Given what we now know of the great German land offensives of the final phase of the war, the consequences for the Allies, without a solution to the issue of maritime supply, could have been catastrophic. The solution came in the form of the creation of the convoy system and its effectiveness was due in no small part to the addition of the U. S. N. destroyer fleet to support the activities of the Royal Navy. This book describes how the German U-Boat threat was finally overcome and how this impacted on the Allied victory. Sims also gives much operational detail including the activities of the deadly decoy's, the 'Q' ships, and the operations of the 'King Cobras' of the undersea war-the anti-submarine submarines.' On June 1, 1898, having finished the house Ida and Edith arrived and we were married at once and commenced housekeeping in earnest. We enjoyed our home and life in Arkansas very much. I finally bought 40 acres more land, set most of it out in fruit and berries. Our one cow had increased to quite a herd, so that we were feeling quite prosperous. In the meantime Mother Pugh had come out and bought Mr. Wilkinson's place joining ours. In time she sold out to Mr. Eicher and they moved back to Des Moines, which seemed to be the rule for all that came from the North. Frederick W. Sims, spelling and punctuation only have been changed. The original copy owned by Everett E. Sims, son of Frederick W. Sims. Sidney G. Sims. The journal was transcribed from Fredrick W. Sims' hand written notes; my grandfather, Everett E. Sims, did this. The original had written journal is not to be found. When I read the neatly typed onion skinned pages, I was in awe. I had no idea the journal existed, or that my great grandfather was anything other than the average nineteenth century citizen that you never hear of. At this point I felt compelled to do something with these stories. I have no idea if there are any revelations exposed here. I really don't care about that.
